The market is concerned about the slowdown in growth in the technology sector so we're seeing all the tech stocks drop pretty significantly today, ... But there doesn't seem to be something that triggered this today.

There will be supply disruptions for a while. As gas and gasoline prices spike, Canadian oil companies are positioned to continue producing as much as they can and benefit from the situation.

Overall today, I think the market's just sort of looking for direction. The same old worries began to resurface as people got back into the swing of trading. Instead of the morning optimism, it just became the same old, same old. The worries about higher rates, about lower earnings, about was the world's economy slowing began to show up again.

Royal Dutch and Exxon have always traded at premiums in the market. The merger puts BP and Amoco in the same size and presence globally, and it should give them the same premium value.

I hadn't expected BP Amoco to be really in the market for acquisitions this quickly. What it tells me is that they have done a faster job of consolidation of Amoco's assets and they feel very comfortable going forward.

Once again we have Nortel and BCE as the responsible parties for the major move in the market and everything else would probably be flat without them.

The fast-growing small technology companies basically ignored the Fed's warning of higher interest rates.

The main reason that we're up is that Nortel's weighting was being increased in the S&P 500, so what we were really seeing is the Nortel rally ... and it pulled BCE along. Without that, it would have been a flat day.

It was once again Nortel and BCE and in addition the cable companies, but again the technology and communication sector is really driving the market.

Now that nobody's worrying about this quarter's earnings, they're now worried about if growth will slow and since Microsoft said yes, that led to a sell-off in technology. There's some worry about Microsoft being split up but I think it's actually more concern about their warning about the future.

It's the same old story. It's Nortel and BCE. Dynamite earnings out of both of those and the stocks just roared ahead. And so went the market.
