I think that the market is in a wait-and-see mood to see whether there is any direction in Friday's reports.

We finally saw an up day after a series of down days.

I would not read too much into the record at this point, ... The Canadian market's been doing very, very well this year. It's doing well for all the right reasons: strong earnings, basic good environment for equities. I expect we'll see more records this year but today's doesn't change the overall view much.

I think that some people are waiting to see whether the market is beginning to indicate one way or the other, whether the Fed will do something different. So there's money on the sidelines right now.

Overall nobody's seeing great ideas out there and people aren't excited about anything right at the moment.

Basically what we're seeing is stocks that reported expected or better than expected first-quarter earnings have moved up, while any company that has really disappointed has gotten slammed. What an ugly day. A day you didn't want to be around to watch. It was just a market that was nervous and unhappy about the news of the day.

I think the market's really in a waiting mode right now and it's not too surprising it would move rather dramatically on anything that was announced.

So now we're getting not only the sell-off in technology but the sell-off in all the interest-sensitive stocks and every place else that people have been putting money.

It's pretty amazing. That's the bottom line.

The market was spending sometime digesting whether this meant more rate hikes for longer and concluded this was nothing different than what people had anticipated. At that point, it was 'let's do this some more,'

Since everybody expects very strong earnings, that then leads to the question of will there be negative surprises just because of how high the expectations are.

The sentiment is nervous and I think today was very negative. People were getting both more nervous and less enthusiastic about where things were going.

I think the sentiment has not entirely shifted away from the belief that technology will continue to do well. But the believers are getting more and more worried about their beliefs.

Whereas earlier in the week things looked definitely abnormal, today looked pretty much like we were back to normal.
