It was fine. They talked to each other between innings. Last year was a combination. They didn't get off on the right foot and they stayed there.

He came to spring training with a plan. He pitched well, seemed to be in real good spirits, got a lot of work in. His command is better than it's been for a few years.

It's not fair what he's been doing, so we have to find some things out. We have to see what we have, player-wise. The only way we expect him to help us is to find a place for him to get some at-bats on a regular basis. He's a big-league hitter, he just needs an opportunity to play.

I don't know if we'll be able to give him the proper number of at-bats, because we can't give them to him continuously, and that's something he's used to. I'm trying to find out how many at-bats will make him useful to us.

I can't make him any promises, and he knows that. Whether Pena is or isn't in our organization, it's not going to keep him from pressing when he gets out there because he's not getting many opportunities to show us what he can do.

I had Bernie going out there with me, but [Sheffield] waved us off. He banged it, but it wasn't anything structural.

We got a good report. He'll go one more, and if that's satisfying, he'll join us.

We want the option in case something happens. There will come a time when somebody needs an extra day or somebody is going to miss a start, so we'll need somebody to plug in.

I'm just trying to find out how many at-bats (a week) will make him useful for us off the bench.

I think he'll pitch for as long as he wants to, because he has the ability to make adjustments as his ability changes. There are a lot of pitchers and players who get a little stubborn and try to do the same things.

It's the whole 'underdog' concept. After [the Rays] beat us a couple of times, sure, it was bound to help their confidence.

When you're the underdog and playing the Yankees, you are going to get some attention if you do good things. They were able to do that. I know I've worn out this expression, but everyone puts on their Sunday best when they play us. They elevate their game.

They can be a pest offensively. They can do a lot of things. There's no giveaways there offensively. Their question is going to be how well they can pitch. As far as putting points on the board, they've got a lot of players who can do some things.

They've got a lot of different ways to go offensively. They've got speed. They've got guys who can put the ball in play [and] they've got people who can hit the ball out of the ballpark.

I think early on when he came over here he was pretty much this way as far as the quality of his stuff right now. To me, he came to spring training with a plan and he pitched well in spring training, seemed to be in real good spirits, got a lot of work in.
