Part is schedule. Part is health. Part is good play. I think all three of those things have had an impact on playing a little bit better. But this is a whole different level, this (Suns) team. This is upper-echelon, top-five team.

I talked to him about (that) we need to pick up a point guard, and also he had an opportunity out there to go and I think play for Denver. We talked about it. I think he decided it was not something he was interested in doing. We told him we were going to waive him. He decided I think to retire. I hope something works out to where he can stay in the Rockets organization. That sequence (with the three consecutive blocked shots), even though they ended up scoring, and Yao coming to help on Andre Miller ? those things are inspiring. And you can tell by the reaction of everybody, the team, the paying customers, that stuff is inspiring.

That was a very disappointing fourth quarter. (The) level of defense, the intensity was not correct, and the shot selection was outside in, versus inside out. That's very disappointing, and we deserve what we got.

I'm not surprised when (Yao) plays well. He is prepared every day. He works hard every day. He's one of the few guys who doesn't need outside motivation. He is without question the best regular-season center in basketball.

He's had many good stretches, it's just that sometimes we get caught up in the numbers. I look at the whole thing, his pick-and-roll coverage, his transition defense. I think he's gotten better from his first game in the NBA through now.

He's as diligent about doing his job as anyone we have.

The starters did a good job to start the game. The bench, inexplicably, is bereft of energy and intensity, and we have all young guys who are trying to carve out a career. I don't get it.

I love his competitive spirit, I love his intensity and I hate the way the game has grown to where you can act your way to calls. In hockey, I like (that) they fine, they fine for dives. And every time the guy exaggerates the contact, the foul would be on him.

My thing about numbers is that people who write about the game should never look at Yao Ming and reduce what he stands for to numbers. Some other guys will maybe play better in the playoffs at times. But he is the best regular-season center in basketball. And the reason is he comes to play every night.

Well, it's been my history with him when he goes out of the game, he's sat out in the past. I don't think he takes himself out lightly.

Our guys try hard on defense. Any time a team goes 1-for-18 (to start a quarter), they are probably going to hit some of those shots most times. We got back and made things difficult for them.
