Governor Douglas wants to put scholarships into the hands and savings accounts of a thousand families for the next year so they can be absolutely certain those resources exist when they decide where they're going to go to college. The Senate proposal is nothing but a stall tactic that fails to deliver what working families need.

It's a fig leaf. It's covering up their unwillingness to commit to the Vermont Promise Scholarship.

The kind of political gimmick that this coalition is trying to sell is the reason we did not get meaningful health care reform last year. We are not going to engage in this silliness.

The governor will outline a comprehensive plan to offer Vermont residents an opportunity to receive a higher education here in Vermont so that they can then work here and raise a family. It's a proposal that will affect an entire generation of school students in the state of Vermont.

They are off to a good start.

Wellness programs have been part of the governor's health care agenda since he was elected. Hospital report cards have been high on the governor's agenda, and the idea of recruiting health care professionals is something he supports.

Frankly, one has to wonder why they would want to poison the well so early in the legislative session.

He will propose a comprehensive plan to put higher education within reach of Vermont students and families. This is a plan that will benefit more than a generation of school students.

The governor recognizes the need to make Vermont an affordable place to live and raise a family. We do need to address day to day issues, but we've got to think about the future down the road.

Addressing the issues of affordability is important to achieving the economic development goals that will be outlined (Thursday), establishing Vermont as a leader in key 21st century industries.

The governor is concerned with a crisis of affordability. He will target economic development efforts that are focused on building generations of opportunity.
