Next week is the big one for earnings. You've got Microsoft, Intel, all the banks.

The stocks that are benefiting most from better earnings are the small and mid-cap ones.

I just think we can't seem to get out of that range we're in. We're in a seasonally difficult time of the year. All the good news is in the market ... it needs a new catalyst.

We did OK for the first half of the month and then faded out -- a lot of the economic data in the last few weeks have been a little discouraging. It's kind of a sour way to end a good quarter but not too bad for the month.

The market could tread water until Friday.

There's optimism about earnings, the fundamentals continue to look good and hiring seems to be picking up. The geopolitical situation is the only thing I can see that could be a real negative. Depending on what happens in Iraq, Bush's credibility could be in question.

It's been a really volatile week. I think the bottoms that we made this week will hold, but that's small consolation.

I don't see that there's any motivation to move higher. The concerns about interest rates, oil prices and Iraq aren't going away. I think we're going to stay in a volatile range. The best we can hope for is the market to move sideways for a while.

The fact that we are grinding higher shows that people are getting more confident.

Where's the motivation to drive stocks higher?. I thought that we could have done better, but there was no real motivation to move things higher or lower.

This is the worst thing you want to see before major events. A huge rally that was really not based on anything substantial, ahead of two major events, is the market setting itself up for disappointment.

All things considered, we're doing OK here. Here we are in the seasonally worst time of the year, and we're hanging in there.

I would say in the next few weeks we can kind of grind in place, maybe a little to the upside. Maybe we'll get through the pre-announcement period without too much trouble, and then we'll get into third-quarter earnings in October, and they should be mostly in line.

I think it's interesting that on a day when crude oil closes over $50 a barrel for the first time, the market is flying.

I hate to say it, but maybe there's a bet that if Kerry wins, (former Secretary of the Treasury) Robert Rubin will take over as Fed chairman, and the market would like that.
