When specifically asked what the [Compaq] customer would do if asked by HP to migrate from their current operating environment to HP-UX, the migration path planned by HP, the overwhelming response is dissatisfaction with the majority of users planning to evaluate alternative suppliers.

[HP and Compaq] management has a conservative projection of $2.5 billion in cost savings. But every merger has failed not because the cost savings were not achieved but because the revenues collapsed.

HP management argues that the cost savings inherent in this deal are significant and that a stronger enterprise computing company will emerge. We, however, believe that the issue is not whether management can achieve their cost savings target of $2.5 billion. The more important issue is how much revenue will be lost from the acquired Compaq business.

The basic hardware profit business is under attack. These companies are all looking for opportunities to make money outside of the box, so to speak. It's become critical for them to take advantage of the ISP market.

Does buying Earthlink pay for itself over the cost of purchasing hosting services from UUNet? I don't think so.

Management's conservative guidance might be more a function of lowering the bar to facilitate exceeding expectations rather than a change in the company's fundamental growth outlook.

While we believe server-based computing will continue to be a healthy trend, we believe Citrix may be challenged to grow at faster than 25 percent longer term.

There is little question that Sun is rapidly gaining market share, but there may also be evidence of a market turn-up for Internet servers at the same time as a turn down for legacy systems. Sun is the long-term winner in the UNIX category and we still do not see how any UNIX competitor can catch them. Sun is the best-positioned UNIX server vendor, with more than twice the UNIX server market share of any of its competitors.

We think this is a great strategic move, but the valuation may be questionable. It's a great strategic move by Sun, in that Sun is taking a stake in the emerging appliance market that could threaten their proprietary server business in the long run.

It is not clear to us whether the slower revenue growth is a function of weaker market demand or historically weak competition becoming more efficient. To be sure, Dell's share gains must come from other major vendors in this increasingly concentrated market.

In case there is any doubt, the good old days for Sun are gone -- Sun no longer writes the rules and the competitive landscape has been leveled with IBM's Regatta about to set sail.

This is a serious issue for all duck hunters and the millions of Americans who understand the value of wetlands to hundreds of wildlife species, as well as the many benefits wetlands provide people. Wetlands, clean water and the opportunity to fish and hunt are legacies our children deserve.

Local control is the main issue here.
