It is natural that the press will manufacture more importance about the religious significance than is our intent. We are not going to reach out to one group at the expense of another, but embrace and acknowledge the fans of a very important piece of literature.

Everyone has his own take on the book, to which the movie is faithful. Rather than embracing any interpretation, we're remaining neutral, adopting the Switzerland approach.

However you're a fan, it really doesn't matter to us. We want you to become a fan of the movie.

We are from Day One going after every fan of the book. We want them to know that however they connected to the book, we've made a movie that's true to the book.

We recognized there were tens of millions of fans of the book ... and therefore we followed a strategy to make a movie that would be true to the book.

We literally left no stone unturned. We went after all fans equally and aggressively.

We edged out 'Kong.' It's been neck-and-neck. These are two great movies in the marketplace that are doing great business.

We were going to remodel it at first, but we decided it would cost more than it was worth. They really desperately need houses to do this.

If we think screenings for the press will help open the movie, we'll do it. If we don't think it'll help open the movie or if the target audience is different than the critics' sensibilities, then it may make sense not to screen the movie.

People are saying that Toronto is more important than normal, ... No clear-cut Oscar front-runners yet.

There are only so many movies you can make in a given year, and this didn't fit into our long-term approach. We were uncomfortable with this kind of humor.

In the case of 'Happiness,' I think the best thing that could have happened was for us to have had the ability to say to Todd Solondz, we want to preserve your vision of this picture even if it means we don't have the ability to release it.
