I think we made a decision last fall when we had our review and planning meetings that we felt comfortable with the talent level of these starters we had.

I think we've always felt Gonzalez had the talent to do it. We felt this was time to see what he can do.

He is a tough, feisty player for us who will put forth the effort. And I like tough guys.

We have such good pitching coming ... to think we've got Jack and Castillo the next four years is a very good feeling.

He's a veteran guy who has had some success and we feel he gives us some depth and some options with our starting pitching.

He's had a little tenderness in his left shoulder. He started feeling it a couple days ago. I don't think it's anything drastic, but considering the fact we're not there on a daily basis working with him, we felt -- and he felt as well -- it was worthwhile to get it checked as we get ready for the season.

We don't think it's anything serious and anticipate he should be ready for the start of the season. We're just being cautious.

It's a case where he tried to get ready too soon to pitch in competitive situations and probably overdid it a little bit.
