Although the international community is not unfamiliar with the name of Taiwan, the fact that the president of the Republic of China was able to travel abroad underscored our status as a sovereign state.

There are people urging that the 'National Unification Council' and its guidelines be abolished. I think now is the appropriate time we must seriously consider it, take a good look at it.

The national unification council will cease functioning and the budget no longer appropriated. The national unification guidelines will also cease to apply.

There will be no change in the commitments that I've made to the U.S. government, to President (George) Bush. Taiwan-U.S. relations will ... become closer ever, and there is no room for the possibility of any so-called accidents.

We first have dinner together and then we go back home to change clothes. So when we go out for fun on the weekend, it's usually already after 11pm or 12am. If all the discos and karaoke bars must be closed after 2am, it's like a party is suddenly ended before it officially warms up.

Over the next four years, I will continue to listen to different views and accept different suggestions.

The whole world is watching Taiwan's democracy, and the 23 million people of Taiwan will get a thumbs up from the world.

The results of the two referenda demonstrate the majority view of the Taiwanese people.

Nevertheless, the people are the masters of our country, and this fact will never change whether or not you voted in today's referendum.

At the same time, we want to again appeal to the mainland to understand how firm the Taiwanese people's will is in wanting democracy and peace.

Even if one tree falls down it wouldn't affect the entire forest.

The election is over, and even though there are people who have different ideologies and beliefs, from now on we must all embrace each other, creating a harmonious and unified new Taiwan through our love and tolerance.

Even if I were knocked down by one gunshot it wouldn't affect our democracy and I wasn't knocked down and I have great confidence in our democracy and in Taiwan and in the people of Taiwan.

God bless Taiwan! Let us join in unity to protect this land and the common future of the 23 million Taiwanese people! We sincerely ask the Beijing authorities across the Strait to view the election result from a positive perspective, to accept the democratic decision of the Taiwanese people.
