I wanted to see how the angle changed on the wall and where the ball was going to go [after it hit the wall]. I think we got a little deeper angle, and the ball is going to bounce more back toward left-center. That's the only thing I was concerned about.

He got his work in. He gave up a few home runs when he fell behind in the count, but otherwise he pitched all right.

Ryan has a rubber arm, and I can put him out there for extended innings. I think Ryan's attitude has been great. We've talked a lot about it, and he's doing well. I'm very pleased with his attitude. He's a competitor and he wants to play and start -- I understand that. I wouldn't want him to feel differently than that.

Nothing Ryan does surprises me. What's great about Ryan, aside from his attitude, is he's only going to get better. He has so much potential that it's scary. This young man is going to play and succeed in this league for a very long time.

He likes to yap. He's got a good personality to him.

Kirby's my friend. He was my favorite player because of the way he played. Kirby had all that energy, and was flamboyant. He carried a big smile. I called Kirby a natural leader.

He's given up some dongs. That can't be good.

He got more disciplined. He started working counts better and he was concentrating at swinging at better pitches.

Getting hit is a part of pitching and how you bounce back is a part of pitching.

That's one thing he showed me this year in spring training. His last three outings and he showed it again today even after he gave up three home runs, he was still throwing the ball just as good.

If you look at our roster right now, we have 25 guys set. (Chris) Coste is not on our major league roster yet. Actually, there are some things we want to do yet. I want to see Bell move (today) and everything.

[Today] we're going to watch and see how he moves. He's not running at full speed and I told him not to overdue it.

He had a great spring. He's improved in the last three to four years and he's going to play in the major leagues but, at the same time, we felt like he needed to play every day. He's going to be a good player.

I think his whole career he's kind of slid under the radar. If someone sat and really watched him, you'd really see how good he is.
