The fourth quarter is going to be volatile and trying. I don't think the market has fully discounted all the negatives in front of it, including the hurricanes' impact on the economy, higher energy prices on corporate profits, and higher inflation.

For that to happen, you need the stocks to drop 50 percent this year. The picture in the telecom sector is not improving.

If the GDP gets revised downward, it's a negative for the markets. If it stays anywhere within the expected range, it gives credence to that the fourth quarter was some economic trough.

There's been a decisive shift to the upside in market sentiment. The Dow has done its job and it has made a statement of recovery based upon defensive-style spending, cyclicality and the absence of accounting-related issues for the Dow.

The market is built on momentum and liquidity. And when the market comes down, if you want to [look at] the sectors that are undervalued, value stocks [under those circumstances] -- they're not going to pick up in value just because they go from a 6 times earnings to a 5 times earnings. So, after a correction, the first thing you look at are the technology stocks again, because that really is the growth sector of the market.

Greenspan's commentary sure indicated there is more than one interest-rate hike to come, and that's not what the market wanted to hear.

The productivity numbers today (Thursday) and tomorrow's (Friday's) report do nothing to support a bullish market. I would be concerned if we saw the unemployment drop below 4 percent because that would show the economy is not slowing down.

Is there still valuation concern out there? The answer is yes.

The CPI will still have an influence on the Fed meeting. You are in a bear market in technology stocks and you'll have to accept that. You're not going to get anything significant until the second half of the year.

You do have some impetus today but there's little conviction and little volume. I didn't see any specific reason behind the rally - people may be just trying to outguess the outcome (of the Fed meeting).

After last week's great run, the market is directionless. We're somewhat hostage until we get more proof that the economy is slowing.

It's important that OPEC comes to a conclusion to help with global supply but it may be too late for the summer season. High oil prices do not help the economy and it will still contribute to inflationary numbers. Oil will be a continuing story to see how the price of oil reacts over the next three weeks to these increases.

There was rotation out of the strong sectors into the weak sectors. Techs really got hammered. Volatility, up and down, means there are just as many sellers as buyers, and people think the (semiconductor) sector might be a little pricey, especially as we come into an economic slowdown.

It was exactly what Wall Street thought. The wording was exact -- no hike, sees inflation risk ahead, recent data shows moderating slowdown is still tentative and preliminary, and leaves open (a) rate hike in August.
