I think the markets probably overreacted when the Federal Reserve first moved toward a neutral operating directive. When Alan Greenspan spoke this time, I think the reality set in and that is, yes, the central bank has a neutral directive, but it's more like an ultra-right (hawkish) form of neutral directive. ... Any time they get an excuse to raise rates, they're going to take it.

There's always that danger that the Fed gets impatient here. But I think that most of the Fed governors today feel that gradualism is the best policy, because if they err on the side of doing too much, the price of being wrong is not so high.

There's no question these higher mortgage rates will take some of the shine off the resiliency in the housing market.

[Consumer prices] are really what you have to worry about. In the consumer price index, there seems to be some extreme resiliency on the service side, which is much larger than the goods side. There's no deflation on the service side.

The CPI report continues to be encouraging. These numbers are stimulating consumer spending by giving consumers more spending power. At the same time, lower inflation will also encourage the central bank to do whatever they need to do.

When you listen to Greenspan's speech, you hear a fear about the sustainability of economic growth and no inflation pressures. Guess what that spells? Lower interest rates and postponing a return to higher rates, to insure the sustainability of growth.

This action really reveals the Fed's excitement with the emerging signs of economic growth we're seeing.

The orders component should jump out and catch your eye. We're still in expansion mode, and recovery is in no jeopardy of derailing, but it's not racing away from us.
