That was a new brand, and certainly now that it's established with a very loyal following and given the amount of hype and buzz they created, that is one barometer of what possibly could have been.

Well certainly the Star was (pun-intended) Star Wars . With three in the top 10 titles for the year, this movie-based property saw very strong sales. That said, other movie-based games fared less well.

While total industry sales have continued to decline, the power of entertainment in driving sales can be seen through the incredible success of franchises such as Star Wars and Dora the Explorer. The Star Wars franchise had a great year, contributing to the increase enjoyed by the Action Figures and Building Sets categories.

The toy industry continues to wrestle with the new digital reality of kids' lives. Kids aren't really 'getting older younger,' they're just playing differently than they have in the past. However, despite this shift, it's important to note that toys continue to be one of the top choices for kids when choosing leisure time activities.

Kids 8 and under are still playing with toys quite a bit. Then we see a drop off at 9. Boys have gone to video games. Girls have gone to instant messaging, e-mailing and cell phones. Scene It? increased its sales in this category by more than 60 percent, fueled largely by new items such as the Harry Potter, Disney and TV versions.

The convenience factor is playing into it more than anything else.

They did a great job of creating the hype. The 360 has largely been out-of-stock at retail since its launch last November. So clearly, selling out is one sign of performance, but you can't say that its market potential has been even close to tested with the limited supplies available.

There is a little feeling of 'holding our breath' right now in the industry, waiting to see how all this will unfold. Console transitions always make the publishing community nervous.

It really depends on when the next two systems launch, and with what launch titles to drive demand for the hardware.

Handheld platforms were the big story last year, and so far this year, that segment of the industry has continued to grow significantly since last year.

We're in a transition period, so a lot of dollars are being saved for new video game consoles. And there are more choices vying for consumer dollars, and more consumers holding on to their money in anticipation of new consoles. Although a lot of people are disappointed _ especially publishers whose sales aren't living up to expectations _ I wouldn't say this is doom or gloom. It's going to be an interesting number of months until everything settles down.

I don't view it as a delay because everyone was planning on it being in the fall if not later. There is some relief it's not going to be delayed longer.

I don't think the delay will impact their ability to capture market share with the next generation. The brand is very strong and Sony was always clear that they would release the system when it was ready and not before.

That would certainly be an interesting development in the market.
